Caltech Alcohol and Drug Survey

February 12-28, 2007 By: Jane M. Curtis, M.A., Health Educator, jcurtis@caltech.edu website

After my December 2006 GSC article regarding the upcoming CADS survey, I received feedback from graduate students. Many of the ideas were incorporated and I appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedules to offer useful suggestions.

The purpose of the Caltech Alcohol and Drug Survey (CADS) is to gather accurate information about current alcohol and drug usage rates, and related areas of interest. I'll use the CADS data to develop educational programs and services for the grad students, and the results will be shared after the data has been analyzed. All currently registered students will be invited to take the survey between February 12-28, 2007. You'll receive an email from SurveyMonkey.com February 12th with an embedded link. PLEASE DO NOT DELETE THIS EMAIL.

By completing the survey, students will be entered into a random drawing to win one of 10 individual prizes. There is a cash prize for the GSC if over 50% of the graduate students take the survey. All prizes will be awarded in March--a total value of $1,400.00!

The last CADS survey was administered in 2000 in the form of a paper/pencil survey. During the fall term, I worked with a group of undergrads and grad students to revise and convert it to an electronic version in order to make it more specific and relevant to Techers.

Your name or e-mail addresses will never be associated with your responses. Students will be assigned a unique ID number in order for the secure server to manage your online survey input. The undergraduate house affiliation question is being asked so it can be determined which house has the highest response rate for the house cash prize. To ensure confidentiality, this question will be removed and ID numbers are destroyed before data is compiled and shared with me. Remember, your responses are voluntary and confidential.

Some students may remember the success achieved when I administered the general health survey in 2004. The goal is to reach the same (or greater) level of participation...51% of students completed that survey. This is an opportunity for Techers to help me better serve students, so please invest the 20 minutes to take the survey. If you have any questions, feel free to send them to jcurtis@caltech.edu.
